Theology for Liturgical Musicians
Music is an integral part of the liturgy. It is no surprise that several documents have been written about liturgical music to aid ministers, before, during, and after the Second Vatican Council! Here are some of the highlights.
Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: the first published document of the Second Vatican Council specifically addresses sacred music in Chapter 6 (no. 112-121).
Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship: a 2007 document by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, all about making music in prayer. Some rich theology here, and beautiful affirmations of those who minister in music.
Music at Catholic Weddings: some tips on planning your marriage liturgy in the Catholic Church.
Formation and Professional Organizations
National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM): The professional organization for music ministers primarily at Catholic churches. Reflections, resources, and suggested music for each Sunday of the liturgical year. NPM also provides two national 5-day summer conferences, as well as regional and virtual offerings throughout the year, for musicians and all who serve at the liturgy.
The Center for Liturgy at St. Louis University: Reflections, guidance, and suggested music for each Sunday of the liturgical year.
American Guild of Organists (AGO): The professional organization for organists.
